Soekarno–Hatta International Airport (CGK), serving Jakarta, is Indonesia’s largest and busiest airport, acting as a major gateway for Southeast Asia. Its modern terminals, extensive facilities, and strategic location make it a key hub for both domestic and international travel.
Historical Background and Origins
The airport opened in 1985, replacing the overcrowded Kemayoran Airport as Jakarta’s main aviation gateway. Terminal 1 was the first to open, followed by Terminal 2 in 1991, as air traffic demand soared. Terminal 3, the newest and most advanced, began operations in 2011 and was fully integrated and expanded by 2016. The airport was designed by French architect Paul Andreu, with an architectural style inspired by traditional Javanese houses. Over the decades, CGK has undergone numerous expansions, including a third runway in 2019 to increase capacity and efficiency.
Terminal Layout and Zones
Soekarno–Hatta Airport has three main passenger terminals:
Terminal 1
- Opened: 1985
- Use: Primarily domestic flights (except Garuda Indonesia and AirAsia)
- Layout: Three sub-terminals (A, B, C), each with 25 check-in counters, 23 aerobridges, 5 baggage carousels, and 7 gates (A1–A7, B1–B7, C1–C7)
- Capacity: 9 million passengers/year (planned expansion to 18 million)
- Design: Reflects traditional Javanese architecture, with lush gardens and open spaces.
Terminal 2
- Opened: 1991
- Use: International flights and some domestic (Garuda Indonesia, AirAsia, hajj/umrah)
- Layout: Three sub-terminals (D, E, F), each with 25 check-in counters, 40 aerobridges, and 7 gates (D1–D7, E1–E7, F1–F7)
- Capacity: 9 million passengers/year
- Special: Terminal 2D/E is for low-cost carriers; 2F is dedicated to hajj/umrah flights.
Terminal 3
- Opened: 2011 (expanded 2016)
- Use: Both international and domestic, hub for Garuda Indonesia and Citilink
- Layout: Modern eco-friendly design, 10 international gates, 18 domestic gates, 112 check-in counters, 59 aerobridges, 10 bus gates
- Capacity: 25 million passengers/year
- Features: Advanced security, energy-efficient systems, rainwater recycling, and large commercial areas.
Check your airline and flight details in advance—terminals serve different airlines and destinations, and walking distances can be significant.
Shopping and Dining
All terminals offer a range of shops and restaurants:
- Shops: Duty-free outlets, fashion, souvenirs, electronics, bookstores, and convenience stores. Terminal 3 has the largest shopping area with international brands and local crafts.
- Dining: Indonesian and international cuisine, fast food, cafés, and bakeries. Options range from quick snacks to sit-down meals, with the greatest variety in Terminal 3.
For authentic Indonesian food, try the local eateries in Terminal 1 and 2. For international chains and more upscale dining, head to Terminal 3.
VIP Lounges
Each terminal features VIP and airline lounges:
- Terminal 1 & 2: Airline and contract lounges for business and first-class passengers, plus pay-per-use lounges.
- Terminal 3: Multiple lounges, including Garuda Indonesia and international airline lounges, with amenities like showers, workspaces, and premium dining.
Access to lounges can often be purchased online in advance, even if you’re not flying business class.

- Wi-Fi: Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout all terminals.
- ATMs & Currency Exchange: Multiple ATMs and currency exchange counters are located landside and airside.
- Left Luggage: Secure baggage storage is available in all terminals.

- Accessibility (PRM): Step-free access, accessible toilets, dedicated assistance, and special seating. Notify your airline or the airport 48 hours in advance for assistance.
- Security & Baggage: Modern screening systems, including level 5 BHS in Terminal 3, and extensive CCTV coverage for safety.
- Lost & Found: Each terminal has a lost property office; items found on planes should be reported to the airline.
- Check-in & Boarding: Check-in counters open 2–3 hours before departure; e-gates and self-service kiosks are available in Terminal 3 for faster processing.
Arrive at least 2–3 hours before your flight, especially for international departures, as security and immigration lines can be long during peak times.
